Homemade Eggnog
Homemade Eggnog is so easy to make with just a few ingredients and it’s even better than any store bought version! Make your holiday extra special with this festive drink!
When it’s Christmas time, you know there’s going to be eggnog. If the stores are sold out, don’t worry, this recipe is easy and more delicious thank store-bought eggnog. If you prefer the boozy kind, try our Spiked Eggnog or an Eggnog White Russian.
Ingredients Needed for Homemade Eggnog Recipe
- egg yolks
- sugar
- whole milk
- fresh ground nutmeg
- ground cinnamon
- heavy whipping cream
How To Make Homemade Eggnog
- Separate egg yolks into a large bowl, reserving the egg whites for another use. Add sugar to the egg yolks.
- Beat with an electric mixer or with a whisk until smooth and pale. Set aside.
- Add milk, nutmeg, ground cinnamon and vanilla to a pan and place over medium heat.
- Whisk often until mixture comes to a low boil.
- Slowly pour milk into egg mixture, a small amount at a time, whisking after each addition to temper the eggs.
- Return to the saucepan and cook, stir continually until mixture thickens and reaches 160° using a digital thermometer or until mixture coats the back of a spoon. Do not boil the mixture.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the heavy cream.
- Refrigerate until chilled about 2 hours.
Serving
Pour into glasses and sprinkle with fresh grated nutmeg.
Recipe Notes
- Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3- 4 days.
- Make it with Alcohol: Add 8 ounces of light rum, spiced dark rum, brandy or bourbon with the heavy whipping cream.
- Large Batch: Double the recipe if you are hosting a crowd.
- More Garnish Ideas: Serve with sweetened whipped cream if desired.
- Make it Sugar Free: Substitute monkfruit sweetener for sugar.

Homemade Eggnog

- 6 egg yolks
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons fresh ground nutmeg plus more for serving

Instructions

- In a large pan add milk, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla over medium heat and bring to a low boil, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and slowly pour a small amount of milk mixture at a time into eggs, whisking until each addition is combined.
- Return mixture to the pan and cook over low heat until thickened and reaches 160° using a digital thermometer or coats the back of a spoon.
- Chill for 2 hours or completely cooled.
- Serve with additional grated nutmeg.
