These are not your mama’s sloppy joes! This is a version of the recipe that my husband grew up on that kicks things up with the savory goodness of Lipton Onion Soup Mix. The onions and bell pepper adds a little extra flavor and color, and it all simmers into a thick, hearty filling that’s perfect for piling high on soft sandwich buns.

Ingredients for French Onion Sloppy Joes

  • Lean ground beef – this recipe would also work with ground chicken, ground turkey or pork
  • Onion – diced
  • Bell pepperif you aren’t a bell pepper fan, skip them
  • All purpose flour – thickens the gravy
  • Lipton Onion Soup Mix – 2 packets for the most flavor
  • Water
  • Worcestershire sauce – Adds zesty flavor to the gravy
  • Sandwich buns – Use your favorite buns or serve it over thick slices of homemade Amish white bread

How to Make Easy Sloppy Joes

  1. Brown the ground beef
    Add ground beef to a large skillet and cook over medium heat, breaking it up as it browns.
  1. Add the onion and bell pepper
    Once the beef is mostly cooked, stir in chopped onions and bell peppers. Continue to cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  1. Add flour: Sprinkle the flour over the meat and veggies, stir to combine, and cook for another minute or two to get rid of the raw flour taste.
  2. Make the Gravy: Stir in the Lipton Onion Soup Mix, water, and Worcestershire sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 cup bell pepper diced
  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • 2 packets Lipton Onion Soup Mix
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 6 sandwich buns

Instructions

  • Cook ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, crumbling as it cooks until browned.
  • Add onion and bell peppers and continue to cook until vegetables are softened. Add a tablespoon of olive oil if ground beef is extra lean.
  • Sprinkle flour over ground beef mixture and stir to combine, cooking 1-2 minutes.
  • Add the onion soup mix packets, water and worcestershire sauce.
  • Stir and continue to cook until mixture is thickened. Lower to simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Spoon sloppy joes mixture over buns and serve immediately.

Notes

Store leftover sloppy joes mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Reheat in a skillet over medium heat, add 1- 2 tablespoons of water, stirring until heated through.
