- Italian sausage – we like mild sausage but feel free to use spicy or add red pepper flakes.
- Olive oil
- Onion
- Bell peppers
- Cooked Farro or pearled barley – I order farro from Amazon but you might find it in your grocery store near the other grains.
- Granulated garlic
- Oregano
- Dried thyme
- Tomato basil sauce (use your favorite pasta sauce).
- Grape tomatoes, fresh basil or grated Parmesan for garnish
How to Make Italian Sausage Farro Skillet
- Brown Italian sausage until fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
- When sausage is browned, add olive oil and sauté sliced onion and bell peppers until veggies are softened.
- Add cooked farro to the skillet, stirring well to combine.
- Stir in granulated garlic, oregano and dried thyme, cooking until fragrant. I didn’t add any additional salt or black pepper to this but feel free to add to suit your tastes.
- Add tomato basil sauce to the farro mixture, cooking until heated through and flavors combine.
- Garnish with sliced grape tomatoes, fresh basil or a sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese if desired.

- How to Cook Farro: Cook 1 1/2 cups dry farro in 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, lower to simmer, cook 20- 25 minutes, until tender. Drain excess water.
